Three firefighters who were first responders to the September 11 attacks have died on the same day, from illnesses related to their rescue efforts at ground zero.
Lt Howard Bischoff, along with firemen Daniel Heglund and Robert Leaver, passed away on Monday – hours apart from one another. They had been suffering from leukaemia, oesophageal and colon cancer respectively.
According to fire commissioner Daniel Nigro, their deaths are ‘a painful reminder that 13 years later, we continue to pay a terrible price for the department’s heroic efforts’.
Thousands of rescuers were involved in the recovery effort on 9/11, with the Fire Department of New York losing 343 of their men and women.
